It's time for another edition of Guess who's coming to the Burgh! Things have been pretty hectic here in the Burgh lately. Just last week MMT and Carla returned to the States, and two days later my friend Tricia came up from Derby to visit for the weekend. We had a really great time enjoying some of my favorite highlights of living in the Burgh, and I was sad to see her leave on Sunday night. But not to worry, because in just 3 days one of my very best friends from Virginia will be making her way across the pond to visit for 2 weeks! Yes, that's right, Ms. Michelle Orton, or as I like to call her, ''Ortie'' will be boarding her flight to make her first trip to Scotland, and she is in for one amazing adventure. I can't wait to show her all of the gems that the Burgh has to offer.
There are so many reason's why I love Ortie. Let's start at the very beginning. A very good place to start. It was 2007, and I had just accepted a job at Randolph-Macon college and was in my first week at my new job. Because I was living in a new town and didn't know anyone, a colleague of mine invited me to a party with some R-MC alumni. At that party Ortie and I were introduced since she graduated from R-MC in 2006. We discovered that we both has a lot in common, and that her family had a beach house near Ocean City, MD, where my family has been going on vacation since I before I was born. (shout out to the conceiving room for those of you who know what I am talking about) So that evening at the party, she announced to everyone she was taking a road trip to OC for the weekend and whoever wanted to join her could. Two days later, we were road tripping it up to Maryland. While in Ocean City we hit my favorite hot spot, Secrets to hear The Amish Outlaws play live. That weekend was so much fun. We were two strangers who were destined to be best friends. That's how I like to think of it!
Thinking back on the past 4 years of our friendship (which I still find it hard to believe it's been 4 years) we have so many fun memories together. For example, the year we decided to dress up like Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders for Halloween with our friend CB from Texas. That Halloween is one I will never forget. When we heard the Amish Outlaws were playing in Baltimore, we knew right away we would head north to see them. Although we didn't win our Halloween costume contest, which I feel like we were robbed of, the night was, amazing. Simply said. Orite- why did I wake up the next morning surrounded in a sea of chicken nuggets and french fries from McDonald's? I also remember something about perfecting dance moves in the mirror, a guy named Jameson, and Krispe Kreme doughnuts. Will need you to jog my memory Friday!
Another amazing memory I have with Orite was our St. Patrick's Day trip to Chicago. St. Patrick's day is one of my favorite holiday's to celebrate and one of the best March 17th's was back in 2008. Ortie and I had a fun hunting for leprechauns, eating deep dish pizza, and rocking out our crazy St. Patty's Day attire. Although we can't be together every March 17th, I always salute her with an adult beverage, that is preferably green. Ortie- I think that March 17, 2012 in Dublin needs to be on your schedule.
Speaking of Ireland, did I mention that Ortie and I traveled together to Ireland. My top three favortie memories of Ortie from that trip include:
Top Memory #3: Ortie goes Stag in Cork
One night we went for a night out in Cork. Ortie decided to head up to the bar for a drink. She ended up meeting a group of boys in town on a Stag week. By the end of the night, Ortie was offered to join the boys on the rest of their week and was bff's with the future groom. That's how she rolls! This was also the night of the infamous fire in Cork. (if you want details for this story, you going to have to ask one of the four girls that were there). Let's just say I should stay out of the kitchen if it's past 3am.
Top Memory #2: Ortie gives the blarney stone more action that it deserved.
This was primarily my fault. We had come up with a plan that I would kiss the blarney stone, and she would take my picture, and then she would kiss it and I would take her picture. Sounds easy right. Well, it would have worked, except I was too busy looking at the photo she took of me in time to get her kissing the stone when it was her turn. So I made her pop down and give that stone what it deserved, more action from her loose lips.
Attempt 1: FAIL
Attempt 2: Win
Top Memory #1: Ortie gives an old man pneumonia.
One night when we were out in Blarney when we stumbled across a local pub where Ortie was determined to meet a man. Since it was a random week-night, there weren't too many options, but there was a nice older gentleman who fancied my friend Ortie. Meet Declan, the senior citizen who wanted to marry Ortie. She had this old man wrapped around her finger that by the end of the evening he literally gave her the sweater off of his back to remember him by. She still has the sweater somewhere. Ortie I think it needs to make it to the Burgh for your trip. We all then joked that Declan caught pneumonia on his walk home because he was so cold since Ortie had forced him to give her his jumper.
All kidding aside, when the two of us are together it is always a guaranteed good time. Ortie is adventurous, fun loving, an amazing basketball player, kind hearted, and even though she steals old man's sweaters, she would give you the shirt off her back. I am so lucky that I have her to call my friend. It is truly and honour. We will be heading to Morocco for her 27th Birthday celebration so keep a look out for more posts about our adventure in the upcoming weeks. Let the countdown begin, t-minus 3 days. See you soon dear friend. I hope you are ready for one wild ride. Let the good times roll!
Until next time, I will see you on the internet.
